Are you struggling with stubborn patches of discoloration on your face? You’re not alone. Melasma affects millions of people worldwide, particularly women. As a frustrating skin condition characterized by brown or grayish-brown patches typically appearing on the cheeks, forehead, nose, and upper lip, melasma can significantly impact confidence and self-esteem.

At Anika Beauty, we understand the challenges of managing melasma. Under the guidance of licensed esthetician Teresa Paquin, we’ve developed comprehensive approaches to effectively target and reduce the appearance of melasma while promoting overall skin health.

Understanding Melasma: The Root Causes

Melasma develops when melanocytes (the cells responsible for producing pigment) become overactive and produce too much melanin in certain areas. Several factors can trigger or worsen this condition:

  • Hormonal influences: Pregnancy, birth control pills, hormone therapy
  • Sun exposure: UV rays stimulate melanin production
  • Genetic predisposition: Family history of melasma
  • Heat and inflammation: Can worsen existing melasma
  • Device screens: Blue light from devices may contribute

The first step in managing melasma is identifying and minimizing these triggers while implementing a targeted skincare routine.

The Power of Mandelic Acid: A Game-Changer for Melasma

When it comes to treating melasma effectively, mandelic acid stands out as a remarkable ingredient. Derived from bitter almonds, this alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) offers unique benefits that make it particularly effective for hyperpigmentation concerns:

Why Mandelic Acid Works So Well for Melasma

Mandelic acid has a larger molecular structure than other AHAs like glycolic acid, allowing it to penetrate the skin more gently while still delivering powerful results. This makes it ideal for even sensitive skin types.

Research has shown that mandelic acid can reduce melasma by as much as 50% in just four weeks through several mechanisms:

  1. Gentle exfoliation: Removes dead skin cells and promotes cell turnover
  2. Melanin regulation: Helps inhibit melanin production at the source
  3. Anti-inflammatory properties: Reduces inflammation that can trigger melasma
  4. Non-irritating: Unlike other acids, mandelic acid doesn’t typically cause the inflammation that can worsen hyperpigmentation

For melasma specifically, mandelic acid breaks up hyperpigmentation without creating additional inflammation—a critical factor since inflammation can trigger more pigmentation in melasma-prone skin.

  2. Treatment Phase Alternate between:

    • Mandelic Plus (available in 5%, 8%, and 15% strengths): For ongoing exfoliation and pigment reduction
    • Face and Body Repair: Contains ingredients that reduce inflammation, exfoliate dead skin cells, increase cell turnover, and strengthen collagen
  3. Nourishing Finish Complete your routine with our Ultimate Ferulic Acid C & E Firming Crème, which contains age-defying peptides and skin-conditioning agents to boost resilience and protect from photoaging while you sleep.

Sarah St Pierre Battling Melasma: A Targeted Skincare Routine for Clearer Skin Melasma, a common skin condition characterized by patchy, brown or grayish-brown discoloration, can be frustrating and challenging to manage. While there is no one-size-fits-all solution, implementing a targeted skincare routine can help minimize the appearance of melasma and promote a more even skin tone. In this blog post, we'll explore specific morning and nighttime routines designed to combat melasma. The morning routine consists of cleansing, applying a mandelic mixture, collagen, and SPF, while the nighttime routine involves cleansing, using a skin renewal treatment or RX treating, and applying a ferulic vitamin C and E cream.Morning Routine for MelasmaCleanse- Begin your morning routine by cleansing your face with a gentle cleanser suitable for your skin type. Cleansing removes impurities, excess oil, and any residue from the previous night's skincare products. Opt for a cleanser that is mild, fragrance-free, and non-irritating to avoid further aggravating the melasma-affected areas.Recommendations: Ultra Calming Cleanser and Gentle Enzyme Facial CleanserMandelic Mixture- Mandelic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), has been found to be beneficial in managing melasma. It helps exfoliate the skin, promote cell turnover, and fade hyperpigmentation. Look for a mandelic acid-based product specifically formulated for melasma treatment. Apply a few drops of the mandelic mixture to your fingertips and gently massage it onto the affected areas. Allow it to absorb fully before moving on to the next step.Recommendations: Mandelic PlusCollagen- Collagen is a vital protein that provides structure and elasticity to the skin. As melasma can often be accompanied by a loss of skin firmness and elasticity, incorporating collagen into your routine can help improve skin texture and promote a more youthful appearance. Look for collagen-based serums or creams and apply a thin layer to your entire face, paying extra attention to the melasma-affected areas. Allow the collagen to fully absorb before proceeding.Recommendations: Ultimate CollagenSPF Protection- Sun exposure is a known trigger for melasma, and protecting your skin from harmful UV rays is crucial for managing this condition. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF rating (at least 30 or higher) and apply it generously to your face and neck, ensuring full coverage of the melasma-prone areas. Re-apply throughout the day, especially if you spend an extended period outdoors or engage in activities that cause perspiration.Recommendations: Tizo, Suntegrity, and Acne SPF 35Night Routine: Cleanse- Before bedtime, cleanse your face once again to remove makeup, dirt, and impurities accumulated throughout the day. Use a gentle cleanser and follow the same technique as in the morning routine. Remember, consistency, sun protection, and patience are essential in the journey to clearer, more even-toned skin.

Melasma, a common skin condition characterized by patchy, brown or grayish-brown discoloration, can be frustrating and challenging to manage. While there is no one-size-fits-all solution, implementing a targeted skincare routine can help minimize the appearance of melasma and promote a more even skin tone.

In this blog post, we’ll explore specific morning and nighttime routines designed to combat melasma. The morning routine consists of cleansing, applying a mandelic mixture, collagen, and SPF, while the nighttime routine involves cleansing, using a skin renewal treatment or RX treating, and applying a ferulic vitamin C and E cream.

Morning Routine for Melasma

Cleanse- Begin your morning routine by cleansing your face with a gentle cleanser suitable for your skin type. Cleansing removes impurities, excess oil, and any residue from the previous night’s skincare products. Opt for a cleanser that is mild, fragrance-free, and non-irritating to avoid further aggravating the melasma-affected areas.

Recommendations: Ultra Calming Cleanser and Gentle Enzyme Facial Cleanser

Mandelic Mixture- Mandelic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), has been found to be beneficial in managing melasma. It helps exfoliate the skin, promote cell turnover, and fade hyperpigmentation. Look for a mandelic acid-based product specifically formulated for melasma treatment. Apply a few drops of the mandelic mixture to your fingertips and gently massage it onto the affected areas. Allow it to absorb fully before moving on to the next step.

Recommendations: Mandelic Plus

Collagen- Collagen is a vital protein that provides structure and elasticity to the skin. Allow the collagen to fully absorb before proceeding.

Recommendations: Ultimate Collagen

SPF Protection- Sun exposure is a known trigger for melasma, and protecting your skin from harmful UV rays is crucial for managing this condition. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF rating (at least 30 or higher) and apply it generously to your face and neck, ensuring full coverage of the melasma-prone areas. Re-apply throughout the day, especially if you spend an extended period outdoors or engage in activities that cause perspiration.

Recommendations: Tizo, Suntegrity, and Acne SPF 35

Night Routine:

Cleanse- Before bedtime, cleanse your face once again to remove makeup, dirt, and impurities accumulated throughout the day. Use a gentle cleanser and follow the same technique as in the morning routine. Pat your face dry with a clean towel.

Skin Renewal PM or RX Treatment- At night, it’s crucial to introduce treatments that aid in skin renewal and target hyperpigmentation. Consider using a skin renewal product specifically formulated for melasma or follow your dermatologist’s prescription treatment plan if applicable. Apply the product as directed, focusing on the melasma-affected areas.

Recommendations: Skin Renewal PM

Ferulic Vitamin C and E Cream- Complete your nighttime routine by applying a ferulic vitamin C and E cream. This combination of antioxidants helps combat free radicals and further supports skin rejuvenation. Gently massage the cream onto your face, allowing it to penetrate and nourish the skin overnight.

Consistency is key when it comes to managing melasma. Implementing these routines diligently, along with a healthy lifestyle and avoiding known triggers, can help improve the appearance of melasma over time.

However, it’s essential to note that results may vary, and patience is necessary. Melasma can be a stubborn condition, and it may take several weeks or even months to see significant improvements. Be persistent, and maintain your skincare routine consistently to achieve the best possible results.

Additional Tips for Managing Melasma:

  • Avoid excessive sun exposure and always wear sun protection, even on cloudy days.
  • Consider using a wide-brimmed hat or seeking shade during peak sun hours.
  • Use physical sunscreens with ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, as they provide better protection against UVA and UVB rays.
  • Consult a dermatologist or skin care professional for personalized advice and additional treatment options, such as prescription creams, chemical peels, or laser therapies.

While melasma can be a challenging condition to manage, adopting a targeted skincare routine can make a significant difference in reducing its appearance. Remember, consistency, sun protection, and patience are essential in the journey to clearer, more even-toned skin.

  • Teresa Paquin Anika Skincare Tips for Acne – Lifestyle Things that affect acne clear  Lifestyle Choices Affecting AcneIf you are someone who struggles with acne and are looking for other ways to help clear your skin, take a look at the following lifestyle choices that affect acne and see if you can make any changes in your own life. LaundryAvoid using fabric softener in the washer and /or the dryer ( no dryer sheets). The waxy residue gets on the pillowcases, towels, wash clothes and sheets that have direct contact with skin.  This residue can clog the pores of acne-prone individuals. If you want something to stop static cling in your dryer, you can get anti- static balls at Bed Bath and Beyond, Target or on-line.Avoid using detergents with fragrance because they can cause skin irritation. It is best to use fragrance free detergent such as Cheer Free, All Free and Clear , Tide Free & Hammer Free.Water Softeners There is some evidence that water softeners can lead to acne, especially those containing high amounts of potassium chloride. It is best to avoid water softeners.SwimmersSwimming pool disinfectants contain iodides and chlorine which can remain in the water, causing skin problems for frequent swimmers. We advise that you apply a thin layer of Vaseline before you get in the pool.Sun Exposure & AcneAlthough sun exposure causes desirable scaling and drying, it also damages the follicle, exacerbates dark spots, and can cause skin cancer as well as premature aging.  We strongly advise that you wear sunscreen whenever you are outside, even if it is overcast and/or raining.Hand LotionsBeware of hand lotions. If you are using a comedogenic hand lotion and leaning your hand on your face ( many do this in front of the computer) or sleeping on  your hands, this could contribute to your acne.Breakouts around the mouth area? Many lip balms, toothpastes, and even facial tissues have comedogenic ingredients in them.  So, if you see breakouts around your mouth area, this is possible why.  We recommend Vaseline or Aquaphor for a lip balm and toothpaste without SLS ( sodium lauryl sulfate). Many well – known tissue brands are infused with things like coconut oil, isopropyl myristate, and SLS, all of which clog the pores. No Picking or Squeezing!Instead of the usual desire to pick or squeeze, try rubbing ice on pustules and pimples for a couple of minutes, twice a day. IMPORTANT: if you pick, squeeze,  and break the skin, the scab will leave a red mark or dark mark that will be there for months, making your skin look WAY worse than if you had left it alone.Birth Control and Hormone ReplacementAvoid low estrogen birth control pills. 'Lo' dose pills are higher in androgen hormones that can make acne-prone skin worse. Norplant, Provera, Depo-Provera shots, most IUDs like Mirena, Skyla and Littetta can be a problem. Also, the Nuvo Ring can cause breakouts as well. Progesterone hormone replacement Premarin can be problematic.  If you have polycystic ovaries, they will cause hormonal changes and breakouts.Recreational and Prescription Drugs that affect acneMarijuana, cocaine speed and steroids used by bodybuildersPrescription drugs– topical and oral steroids, anticonvulsants, Lithium, thyroid meds, Quinine , Isoniazid, Immuran, Danazol, Gonadotrophin, Cyclosporin, Disulfiram, Phentermine, ADD/ADHD drugs.Chemicals that affect acneCoal tars ( roofers) , grease ( mechanics, cooks, waiters) , chlorinated industrial chemicals, dioxin.Making these changes to your lifestyle isn't going to magically make your acne disappear.  However, being aware of these lifestyle choices that can negatively affect acne can help you identify what you are doing in your own life and how that might be affecting your skin.  The first step is awareness and from there, you can make any  necessary changes that are right for you! If you need help on how to clear your acne and what type of products to use please call me at 603 595 0224. • Chantal McCulligh Your Ultimate Skincare Guide to Saving Your Skin From This Summer It’s no secret that the sun is damaging to your health. You’ve heard it time and time again but unfortunately, most people only realize the effects of sun damage once it’s too late. Perhaps their skin suddenly starts showing discoloration or like Lisa Pace, perhaps it’s after having 86 skin cancers removed as a result of her tanning bed usage. But here’s the thing, these aren’t rare cases that you only hear about in the media. Everyone experiences skin damage from the sun if they have not taken proper action to protect themselves from it, with some damage is far worse than others. Although, the worst-case scenarios still aren’t as rare as you may think. And with summer right around the corner, there is no better time to start taking better care of your skin which starts with – you guessed it, properly protecting your skin from the harmful UV rays.  Is The Sun Really That Bad for your Skin?Everyone has heard of the horror stories associated with UV damage to the skin but yet, many people still choose to turn a blind eye to them with the assumption that, “it won’t happen to me”. Unfortunately, the reality is that it can very well happen to you or to anyone who doesn’t properly protect their skin on a regular basis. In fact, studies have shown that more people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the United States than all other cancers combined and one in five Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70. So yes, the sun really is that bad for your skin. Even if you are one of the lucky few that will not develop skin cancer, you are not exempt from other types of sun damage, which I will explain further in just a moment. How Does The Sun Harm Your Skin? The sun is damaging to your skin in many ways. In fact, it doesn’t even have to be shining in order for it to penetrate through the thick clouds and right into your skin cells. And that, alone, says a lot about just how powerful it is. Now, imagine what it has been doing to your skin and what it continues to do to your skin as you bask in the sun or frolic on the sandy shores without proper protection. It’s terrifying. But how does it damage your skin, you ask?The sun emits incredibly strong UVA and UVB rays that essentially burn your skin cells or in technical terms, damages the fibers in the skin which leads to various types of signs and symptoms, such as wrinkles, sagging or stretching skin, or the many other different types of skin damage which leads me into the next topic… What Are The Different Types of Sun Damage to the Skin?Sun exposure can cause a vast array of changes to the skin, many of which people mistaken as a normal part of aging. But don’t be mistaken, no sun damage to the skin is considered “natural”. To help you determine whether you are donning the signs of sun damage, here are the various signs to look for:Fine and coarse wrinklesFrecklesScaly, rough patches of skinRaised bumps that look like wartsDiscolored areas of the skinA yellow discoloration of the skinConstantly dry or split lipsAge spots (extra-large freckles)Benign tumorsAtypical molesSun burnsRosacea (damaged blood vessels under your skin)Lines, wrinkles or saging skin (destruction of elastic and collagen tissue) … And just because you may not have some or any of these signs of sun damage today does not mean that you are safe. Sun damage is rarely apparent when you’re young and almost always shows up later in life when the damage has built up. Think of it like this – your skin is the skin on a fruit; you might experience discoloration and minor damage from time to time but eventually, the damage continues to grow and worsen, and the fruit becomes rotten, unless you cut out the damaged parts and take proper action to keep the fruit from exterior harm, such as storing it in a proper temperature, moisture and environment.  How to Repair Sun Damaged Skin?It isn’t all-downhill from here, though. The first step to protecting your skin from further damage is to educate yourself on the topic and you’re here doing that right now. Good for you.The next step is to learn the various ways you can prevent further sun damage to your skin and help repair the damage that has been done. As a Licensed New Hamshire Aesthetician and Makeup Artist, here are the professional recommendations I give to clients who are looking to prevent and repair their skin from sun damage: Improve discoloration by using skincare that have ingredients that help reduce inflammation and contain powerful anti oxidants to help reduce the damaging effects of the sun. Below is a list of ways to protect your skin from the sun. Be Weary of Dangerous Chemicals in SPF Sun ScreensIn a perfect world, all sun screen products would be created to provide the wearer with optimal health and protection. Unfortunately, many of them are full of harmful chemicals that include, but are not limited to things such as oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, octinoxate and homosalate. What may shock you is that it isn’t just “low end” cheap sunscreen products that have these types of chemicals in them. In fact, if you were to go grab a sunscreen bottle in your house right now, chances are you’ll find at least one of these chemicals in the ingredient list. So, although these sunscreens may provide you with protection from sun, they are causing you harm in many other ways that can cause similar, if not worse damage. Now, mineral sunscreens are often the better option with many of these including ingredients such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. I suggest using Suntegrity which has 100% natural, non nano zinc oxide, organic, safe ingredients sun lotions. You get the sun protection you’re looking for without subjecting your health to other problems. Use a Natural, Organic Sun ScreenWith the prior mentioned, it’s imperative to not only wear sunscreen but to wear an natural sunscreen to ensure you aren’t lathering your skin with harmful chemicals.
